This chapter provides information on setting up a Data ONTAP 10.0 system.
This chapter describes the setup process for the node. Before setting up, ensure that all hardware components are installed as described in the Installation and Setup Instructions flyer.
A Data ONTAP 10.0 system has the following Ethernet connections:
Table 2.1. Ethernet connections
| Ethernet port | Name |
|---|---|
| e0a | Cluster port one |
| e0b | Cluster port two |
| e0c | Data port one |
| e0d | Data port two |
| e1a | Management port one |
| e1b | Management port two (not used) |
At minimum, a Data ONTAP 10.0 system requires three network subnets, one for each of the following purposes:
A physically secure, dedicated network to connect to the two cluster ports on each node
A general corporate network to connect to the two data ports on each node for access to client data
A physically secure, dedicated network to connect to the management port on each node
Before initializing a Data ONTAP 10.0 system, you must obtain the following configuration information from your network administrator. Use the following table to enter the information that is needed during the installation process.
Table 2.2. Configuration information

Before initializing the Data ONTAP 10.0 software, ensure that all hardware has been correctly set up and cabled, as described in the Installation and Setup Instructions flyer for your node. Check all cables and cords for the proper physical connections. The software initialization procedures require the following connectivity and configuration:
The cluster ports (e0a and e0b) are connected to the cluster network.
The data ports (e0c and e0d) are connected to the data network.
The management port (e1a) is connected to the management network.
You must configure the management port on each node, even if you do not use it to manage the cluster.
The Fibre Channel ports are connected to the ports of the disk shelf or shelves, and disk-shelf IDs are set properly.
The NVRAM5 adapters are connected to the identical adapters on the partner node.
The console port is connected to a console configured for ANSI-9600-8N1.
To initialize the Data ONTAP 10.0 software, perform the following steps.
Turn on the power to any switches.
Turn on the disk shelves within five minutes of one another.
Turn on any tape devices.
Turn on the power to the node.
It takes the LEDs on the system power supplies a few seconds to illuminate.
Verify that all network LEDs are properly lit.
Go to the system console. The boot menu is displayed:
(normal) Normally (install) Install new software first (setup) Run setup first (init) Initialize disks and create flexvol (maint) Boot into maintenance mode (reboot) Reboot device Please make a selection:
Enter setup at the prompt.
Answer the prompts as follows:
Please enter the node hostname []:Where is the node located? []:node_nameDo you want to configure a management interface? (no, yes) [yes]:locationyesWhich port do you want to use? (e1a, e1b) [e1a]:e1aPlease enter the IP Address for this interface:Please enter the Netmask for this interface:management_port_IP_addressPlease enter the IP address of the default gateway:management_port_netmaskDo you want to run DNS resolver? (no, yes) [no]:gateway_IP_addressyesPlease enter DNS domain name(s):Please enter the IP address for the first nameserver:domain_name_or_namesPlease enter the IP address for the second nameserver:name_server_1_IP_addressname_server_2_IP_addressDo you want to enable remote management? (no, yes) [yes]:yesPlease specify the remote management username [admin]:adminWhich access protocol(s) can this user use? (console, http, ssh, telnet) [console]:console, ssh, http
NetApp recommends that you enable all desired management-access protocols from this prompt. If you decide after initial system configuration that you need to enable additional management-access protocols, use the security login new command. See the Administration Reference for details about this command.
Perform the following steps to download and install the latest version of the Data ONTAP 10.0 software: Software images are available from the NetApp on the Web (NOW™) site at now.netapp.com. Contact your NetApp representative for the specific URL for the Data ONTAP 10.0 software image; the following example assumes that the software image's URL is http://now.netapp.com/NOW/download/software/ontap/10.0.0/DOT-10.0.0.tgz.
Enter the install command at the boot menu:
(normal) Normally
(install) Install new software first
(setup) Run setup first
(init) Initialize disks and create flexvol
(maint) Boot into maintenance mode
(reboot) Reboot device
Please make a selection: install
The process proceeds interactively, as in the following example:
Which image to replace: (image1 or image2) ?image1What is the URL for the package?http://now.netapp.com/NOW/download/software/ontap/10.0.0/DOT-10.0.0.tgzThe software will be installed to the alternate image, from which the node is not currently running. If storage failover is configured, the partner node must also be updated to a compatible software version before a send-home is initiated. Do you wish to continue? (y or n)yInstalling software using this command will destroy the configuration data and software images stored on this node. Do you wish to continue? (y or n)yDo wish to set the newly installed software as the default to be used for subsequent reboots? (y or n)yThe node must be rebooted to start using the newly installed software. Do you want to reboot now? (y or n)y
The node restarts and the prompt returns to the boot menu:
(normal) Normally (install) Install new software first (setup) Run setup first (init) Initialize disks and create flexvol (maint) Boot into maintenance mode (reboot) Reboot device Please make a selection:
Enter init at the prompt.
Answer the prompt as follows:
Zero disks and install a new file system? (y or n): yThe node restarts. Log off of the console connection.
Repeat these steps for each additional node in the cluster, then continue to the following section and configure the initialized system.
